About Boca Raton
Located 43 miles north of Miami, the city of Boca Raton (pronounced “rah-tone”) is the southern most city in Palm Beach County, Florida. It is also one of the wealthiest communities in south Florida. Boca Raton is the home of Evert Tennis Academy, owned by professional tennis player Chris Evert, and the Town Center Mall, which is the largest indoor mall in Palm Beach County. Mizner Park, Boca Raton’s downtown, is another major attraction to the area.
In the early 1900s, Boca Raton was a tiny agricultural community, many of the farmers specializing in pineapple cultivation. The town was incorporated in May of 1925 at the height of the Florida land boom. The noted society architect, Addison Mizner, was commissioned by the town council to plan a world-class resort community. His exclusive hotel, the Cloister Inn, was completed in 1926, and continues to be a city landmark as the Boca Raton Resort and Club. Although the demise of the land boom prevented Mizner from realizing his dreams for the city, a few of his buildings survive today, and his architectural style continues to influence the city.
This remarkable city has grown from a farming village of 18 souls in 1903 to a bustling urban area, home to more than 80,000 people. With two miles of beaches on the eastern coast (including Red Reef Park and South Inlet Park), a prosperous economy, a vast array of public and private schools, and a unique Mediterranean architectural theme, it is no wonder so many people choose to call the glorious city of Boca Raton home.
