Seminole County is an area located in the center of Florida less than 10 miles north of Orlando. It is located just under 10 miles inland as well and has a population of roughly 422,000. The county seat is Sanford which sits in the northern part of the county.
The county was named after the famous Seminole people who lived in many parts of Florida before the Europeans arrived. It is with the Seminole people that the first, second, and third Seminole Wars were fought. The name was a broad term that described many Native American and African American people who resided in the state at the time. A remnant of these peoples still remain in portions set aside in the Florida Everglades.
The county was established in 1913. The land was taken from the nearby Orange County. Besides having a convenient proximity to the theme parks in its neighboring county, Seminole County boasts attractions of its own. The area features several natural springs where visitors can cool off by swimming, or simply resting in the shade of the surrounding trees. Wekiwa Springs State Park offers many outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, swimming, canoeing, and bird watching.
Many of the county’s cities and towns are nestled charmingly among the abundant trees. Several of its neighborhoods are backed right up against large lakes that provide residents with great views and the opportunity to take their boats out onto the water. This, combined with the tropical weather, makes living in this county a dream come true.
